On Monday, the Southern Highland News published a poll which asked the public whether they would support a popularly elected mayor in the shire.
The results came back with overwhelming support for a popularly-elected mayor with 86 per cent of respondents choosing this option while 14 per cent voted against a mayor elected by the people.
Mayor Duncan Gair said council would need to hold a referendum or a plebiscite to change from a councillor-elected to a popularly-elected mayor.
Cr Gair said the earliest this could happen would be in five years.
The next mayoral election is in September this year.
