In The Day that Dunkley Died - Murder and Retribution in Colonial Gunning, Keith L Brown has outlined the murder case of Henry Dunkley using both primary and secondary historical sources.
The story began when London-born convict Henry Dunkley came to Port Jackson in 1918 and as it unfolds the reader is drawn into a tale of adultery, deception and murder in a fine description of rural life in the 1840s.
Court transcripts, letters to authorities and newspaper excerpts cover the case and trial of murderess Lucretia Dunkley and her boyfriend Martin Beech in a multi-layered, easy to read way.
The book is well illustrated and also includes a chapter outlining a number of irregularities from other, previous publications.
The key players in this tragic tale are well represented in details which give the reader a clear idea of their character and backgrounds and the roles they played.
Lucretia Dunkley and Martin Beech were hanged at Berrima Gaol in 1843.
