Volunteers are recruited and trained to improve the quality of life of an isolated person in a local aged care home, in the resident's own home or by taking part in group activities in an aged care facility.
Community Visitors Scheme volunteers are matched to a resident with similar interests or lifestyle and visit once per week or fortnight for one hour.
Volunteers provide a connection to the wider community and a reduction in social isolation.
To be a community volunteer, applicants must be over 18 years of age, enjoy spending time with older people, and be a good listener and communicator.
They must be able to commit to a minimum of one hour per week or fortnight for a minimum of 12 months.
Community volunteers will also be required to maintain monthly contact with their Red Cross co-ordinator and undergo a criminal history check.
Red Cross is looking for people from all walks of life, including men, women, couples, mature aged students and others with an interest in social inclusion.
Community visitors are provided with training, information and resources.
They will receive ongoing support from their co-ordinator.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders are encouraged to apply.
