It is also the 50th year since Australia withdrew troops from Vietnam.
Two services in the Highlands will be held to commemorate and honour those who served in Vietnam.
On Thursday, August 18 Honour Our Fallen executive group will meet at the Bowral Vietnam Memorial at Settlers Park, Bowral, at 3 pm for a 3:20 pm service to lay a wreath in memory of all those who served and supported troops in Vietnam.
Director Rick McCarthy OAM said it was important to remember "those who gave up their lives for what we have today and those who silently carry scars from their service."
"Fifty-six years ago at 3.20 pm 'D' Company 6RAR engaged the enemy in a fierce conflict history recorded as the Battle of Long Tan," he said.
"Eighteen brave young men killed, and 25 wounded.
"Anyone who wishes to join Honour Our Fallen committee Rick McCarthy 6RAR, John Stead 161 Recce Sqn and Graeme Moffatt 6RAR on Thursday are very welcome.
"Lest we forget and thank you for your service."
The initiative is the brainchild of Southern Highlands resident Rick McCarthy OAM.
It aims to support ex-service people and honour the memory of those who fought for Australia.
Launched on Remembrance Day 2017, Honour Our Fallen was originally intended to bring together local schools to research the graves of ex-service people in their local cemeteries throughout the Highlands.
The charity was inspired by a trip to America where veterans were honoured and respected, with Rick determined to remember and honour fallen servicemen and women.
"Honour Our Fallen aims to create respect and community acceptance of those currently serving and returning from deployment, including an understanding of their physical and mental issues when returning to civilian life while also highlighting the virtues of service to our nation."
A second service by the Southern Highlands Vietnam Veterans Peacekeepers and Peacemakers Association will also hold a memorial service on Sunday, August 21 at 11 am.
The service will be held at the Vietnam War Memorial at Settlers Park, Bowral.
