Holding on has been what the Mittagong Lions have had to do in a lot of their victories so far this Macarthur First Grade Premiership season and their round 11 clash was no different.

After a very dominant first half, the Lions looked home and hosed, but the Thirlmere Roosters had other plans.

The Roosters scored three second half tries to make the match closer than it should have been, but the Lions held on to win 30-22 at the Mittagong Sports Ground on Sunday, June 19.

Lions player coach James Grehan said although the result was great, his side was still struggling to put in an 80-minute performance.

"At half time, everyone was talking about not falling off like previous weeks," Grehan said.

"When we get in front, we have to keep our feet on the accelerator.

"I think we're too nice of a team.

"When teams have a roll on against us, we have to learn how to stop them.

"We know how good we can be and we just have to fix those periods of the game.

"However, at the start of the season we were losing them and now we're starting to win them."

Despite consistently dropping off late in games, the Lions are getting closer to where they want to be.

"We're getting closer to playing the full 80-minutes," Grehan said.

"The Roosters had a roll on today, but the good thing was we worked hard in areas where we hadn't been.

"For example, when they kicked the ball, we had numbers around the ball rather than just letting it bounce and falling into the hands of an opposition player."

A string of wins has now given the home side the platform to push for finals.

"I feel like we have momentum now," Grehan said.

"We've had to overcome a few injuries, but now our players are back and they're all executing the game plan a lot better.

"To make finals, we now have to beat all the teams below us and jag a couple of the teams above us."

The Lions, which sit eighth on the ladder, next play the City Kangaroos at Fullwood Reserve from 3pm on Sunday, June 26.
