What to see
There are three new things you can watch on the big screen this week. Tom Cruise's highly-anticipated performance in Top Gun: Maverick (M) will be hitting the cinema with an advanced screening on Wednesday, May 25 at 6.30pm, 7.15pm and 9pm. You can also see it from Thursday, May 26. Watch a musical based in the city of light in An American in Paris: The Musical (CTC) on Saturday, May 28 and Sunday, May 29 at 1pm. General admission tickets are $25 per person and $23 for concession card holders. You can see Wash My Soul In River's Flow (PG) - a story of love, loss and identity, on Saturday, May 28 at 4.30pm with a Q and A session with director Philippa Bateman. Tickets are $25 each and proceeds will be donated to The Archie Roach Foundation. See all of these, plus many other movies, at the Empire Cinema in Bowral. General movie tickets are $13 each for adults and concession holders, and $48 for two adults and two children. They can be purchased on the cinema's website or in-person.
Blue Square Art Exhibition
Support Can Assist
This annual exhibition showcases square photos, paintings and drawings that all feature the colour blue. Blue Square Art organiser Sonja Millis believes blue can hold different meanings for people. Funds raised will be dedicated to Can Assist Southern Highlands, which offers financial support to people diagnosed with cancer and their loved ones. The exhibition will be opened by award-winning artist Zoe Young on Friday, May 27 at 6pm. You can register to attend the opening on Eventbrite. It will be on display from May 27 to Sunday, June 5. at the Bowral Art Gallery.

Blue Square Vocal Muster concert
Support Can Assist
The Vocal Muster is collaborating with Sonja Millis to raise funds and awareness for Can Assist Southern Highlands. Young singers from the Muster will perform different songs at this concert. Appetisers will be provided at this event and 50 per cent of ticket sales will be donated to the charity. The Vocal Muster gives young performers the opportunity to be mentored and get quality singing training for free. You can see this special concert on Sunday, May 29 at Fairground Follies from 12pm to 3pm. Tickets are $65 each and can be purchased through Eventbrite.
Platinum Duo
This weekend
Shane and Kath Tapper will be entertaining guests with all genres of music this weekend. Enjoy a meal and listen to some live music at the Robertson Bowling Club on Saturday, May 28 from 6pm to 9pm. It is a free concert.
Southern Highlands Botanic Gardens Open Day and Plant Sale
This weekend
Discover magnificent gardens in the heart of Bowral this weekend. There will be walking tours during the day where you can explore the gardens and see the national plant collections. See what the future designs for the gardens involve, which include an education centre, visitors information building, café and more. You can also bring a picnic lunch. Come along to the Southern Highlands Botanic Gardens on Sunday, May 29 from 9am to 1pm to check it all out. It is a free event.
Mittagong Junior Disco
This month
Children can dance with their friends at this disco. There are also vouchers to win, which will be drawn on the night. The popular dance is making a comeback on Saturday, May 28 at Mittagong RSL, from 4pm to 6pm. Entry is $5 per child, with funds going back to children in the Highlands community. Vivace Berrima! Silver Serenade concert
The sounds of the piano and flute
Sit back and relax for an afternoon of musical delights. Christine Draeger will play the flute and John Martin accompany her on the piano. They will bring compositions from composers like J. Haydn, CPE Bach, Faure, Debussy, Draeger and Carr-Boyd to life. Come along on Sunday, June 5 at the Berrima Village Hall, on Argyle Street, at 2.30pm. Those interested can email lyndall1906@bigpond.com or call 0408 839 687. Tickets are $35 each for adults and $20 for students with concession cards. Names will be marked off when you arrive.
Local history display at Berrima District Museum
The long weekend
Immerse yourself in some historical stories and artefacts. The exhibition Gardens and Landscapes of the Southern Highlands, Then and Now, showcases different stories across digital screens and displays. There will be games and activities for younger visitors. Come and see it all at the Berrima District Museum at 1a Market Place, at the corner of Bryan Street, Berrima from Saturday, June 11 to Monday, June 13. Admissions are $10 per adult and free for children. The museum is open from 10am to 4pm.
Lunch time concert: Home and Hearth
Coming up
Relax by a fire and listen to a series of sonatas performed in a historic church. Soprano Danielle Grant, violinist Tara Hashambhoy and pianist Diana Weston will bring different symphonies to life. Popular songs with improvisations from violinist Ann Carr-Boyd will also be showcased. You can go to St Jude's Church in Bowral on Saturday, June 11 at 2.30pm for this concert. Bookings can be made by calling 4868 1768 or 0411 375 821. Tickets are $5 each, and can be paid for at the door. Card is accepted.
Southern Highlands Symphony Orchestra: Winter Concert Series Two
Coming up
Celebrate the region's musical talents at this unique concert. The Southern Highlands Symphony Orchestra (SHSO) will perform with local composer John Corley, clarinet player Alexandra Donaldson and violinist Emily Sinden. Alexandra will perform composer John Carmichael's suite of dance movements Fetes Champetres and Emily will bring Pierre Rode's Violin Concerto number seven to life. Musicians will also showcase other European compositions and dancers from Angus and Lucinda's Academie will accompany performances. There will be two concerts at Oxley College on Saturday, June 25 from 7.30pm to 9.15pm and Sunday, June 26 from 2.30pm to 4.15pm. Tickets are $45 per adult, $40 for concession holders, $15 for students between the ages of 16 and 21, and students up to the age of 15 can enter for free. Tickets can be purchased from Trybooking, https://shso.org.au/concerts/ or the Destination Southern Highlands centre in Mittagong.
