Fuel cost concerns
Cristina Talako's article, "The Big Factor Restricting the EV Market", CT April 6 notes that Australian standards for fuel emissions cars is 8l/100kms. Comparable nations have a standard of 4l/100kms.
Here's an idea: if all new cars met the international standard, then fuel costs for owners would drop by 50 per cent. However, this obvious improvement has been considered since 2015 by a Ministerial Forum led by the Hons Barnaby Joyce, Sussan Ley and Angus Taylor.
One has to wonder who benefits from the sale of extra fuel and who is influencing the Ministers - it's definitely not Australian car drivers.

Environment an 'extremely important matter'
Our Federal Coalition Government is having a great deal to say about the economy and jobs in relation to the forthcoming Federal election. And so they should be as the economy and jobs are, of course, of prime importance. But there are so many other extremely important matters, related to the environment, that somehow seem to not be on the radars of our Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce
I expect that at the time of our coming Federal election, on May 21, a great many Australian's will see that although the economy and jobs are essential, so also is being able to have clean air to breath, a stable climate and laws that properly protect our fragile, and in many ways endangered, environment.

Worse than a gaffe
Some things are a lot worse than a "gaffe". For example:
- ignoring key recommendations of the Aged Care Royal Commission including very low rates of pay, chronic understaffing leading in many cases to lack of basic care
- such as toileting and showering ,clean bedding, poor food and nutrition, and a litany of other dreadful issues in our care of our cherished elders.
- callous persistence with Robodebt, found by the court to be illegal
- lack of serious action to address climate change thus exposing our kids and future generations to calamitous consequences
- rort after rort called out by the Auditor General in grants programs heavily biased to favour Lib/Nats reaching nearly $1 billion.
- breaking promises for an independent and effective anti-corruption integrity body thereby avoiding scrutiny of actions and a means of calling those involved to account
There are a lot of other issues you could reasonably judge to be much more serious and of far greater consequence than a "gaffe", but throughout the past week this was the major election issue for media. What hope is there for a decent and caring society if this is the level of our election discourse.
