The event's launch coincided with the release of new data from NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research which showed the rates of domestic violence and sexual assault continued to grow in NSW despite a decline in other crimes.
Play and Chat aims to create a supportive environment for mothers, caregivers and children by providing a space separate from a woman's immediate circle of friends who may know of the issues she is experiencing at home.
Instead, it is a social event to make life "normal", without placing pressure on women to discuss issues experienced at home however, support is available if it is desired.
Play and Chat is also open to women who haven't experienced domestic violence but are looking for a way to integrate into the community.
Play and Chat facilitator Lauren said the program had the ability to flex and adapt to meet the needs of the mums and children attending.
"We provide a safe space for mums to share and learn, commitment free," she said.
The sessions are designed to encourage participation in a range of fun activities, while also providing adult caregivers access to free and confidential advice over a free morning tea.
For a few hours a week, Play and Chat offers a safe, non-judgemental space where visitors can relax, be heard, and connect with their children and the community.
Play and Chat is run by experienced volunteers and the sessions are specifically designed in a short format to encourage participation where trust is built over time.
One volunteer said she saw changes in children on a weekly basis.
"There's a greater affection and interaction in their relationship with their mums and overall it's just a very special and beneficial program to be involved in," she said.
The playgroup is held in Bowral every Monday and Friday from 10am to noon.
