Sam Zilinskas said the road was a "fatality waiting to happen" if the road was not given urgent attention.
"After deciding to share a post via social media about the state of the roads in the Southern Highlands I received quite an overwhelming response," he said.
"However, one road which was regularly mentioned was Old South Road. This road is a major link for many Highlanders as it connects Bowral, Mittagong and the Northern Villages via the airstrip.
"It is death trap waiting to happen and needs urgent attention now."
The Wingecarribee Shire Council candidate said he created a petition to fix Old South Road a week ago in order to grab the attention of the council.
"In this short period I have already received about 620 signatures and many passionate individuals are still continuing to sign," he said.
"I am committed to sorting out Old South Road. This is major connection for the Southern Highlands and is used frequently by motorists and school buses per day.
"It is riddled with large ruts and potholes and some parts are not even adequately sealed.
"The majority of this critical infrastructure is signposted at 80km and major incident or fatality is waiting to happen if the road is not given urgent attention.
"Wingecarribee Shire Council has an obligation to ensure every single individual within the local government area is safe."
A spokesperson for Wingecarribee Shire Council said council was in discussion with the Transport for New South Wales regarding final funding details and a commencement date.
"Construction for Stage 1 of the multi-million-dollar upgrade of Old South Road (Merrigang Street to Range Road) is anticipated to commence this year," they said.
