How did you feel when you were announced as the 2022 Young Citizen?
I was extremely surprised to be announced as Young Citizen of the Year for the Wingecarribee. It was a true honour to accept the title at local council chambers.
How did you get involved with R U OK?
I became involved with RUOK after wanting to make a positive change within the community and raise awareness to improve mental health.
Why is mental health so important to you?
Mental health is important to me because it affects so many people. Most people will know at least one person who suffers from a mental health illness, such as anxiety, and depression, which are all manageable.
Unlike physical illnesses, mental illnesses can be masked. You don't always know if someone is okay.
That's why it is imperative people learn to identify the symptoms, ask the question; RUOK, listen and support those around you.
What is your proudest achievement so far?
My proudest achievement so far is changing myself!
I used to be a bit of a muppet, and it was only in year 11 that I started to try in school and become a better person.
Through changing I was able to grow leadership skills, thus, allowing me to encourage a positive change within the community.
What are your plans for the future and year 12?
My plan for this year, being my final year of school, is to focus on my schoolwork and study.
I would also like to continue working with/in the community in making a difference and helping raise awareness of prevalent issues.
Thankfully, as school captain, I can partner with students in the school, and with their help continue raising awareness for issues in the community, whilst also having time to focus on study.
And, as for my plans beyond year 12, I hope to study medicine and become a doctor.
I will continue advocating and raising awareness for issues that mean a lot to me after school.
