Founded by Katrina Chadwick in January 2022, the club is combining a love of literature with a desire to re-establish community connections after an isolating two years.
The News sat down with Katrina to learn more about the positive effect this group is having on Marulan.
GP: What was the catalyst for the book club's creation?
KC: Sheer determination to start something new that I could gain enjoyment from and meet new people. 'Bookstagram' and 'Booktubers' are all over social media for people wanting book recommendations and a community.
I get so much inspiration from them. However, I love the feel of a physical book and I struggle with reading ebooks. I'm stuck halfway between the virtual/electronic reading experience and the physical book/face-to-face reading experience.
I had looked for book clubs in the past but with kids and work commitments it never worked out as the groups would be in Goulburn or the Southern Highlands.
Then, dare I mention, COVID mandated that we all be at home and I don't know about everyone else but for me, I really felt the lack of human connection. Talking to neighbours, friends and family was all virtual and the people I've spoken to have said they appreciate reconnecting post lockdowns.
GP: How much interest was there?
KC: I was so excited when I posted on our local Facebook group for Marulan, I had lots of interest. So many people had reached out to get more information.
There was a lot of back and forth to lock in a date for the first catch up in January. I was honestly only expecting three people. Myself and a friend I talked into joining and maybe one other person.
But I'm getting messages from people every few days so I think it will grow over time.
GP: Has reading always been an important part of your life?
KC: Reading has played a monumental part of my life. One of my primary school teachers started reading to us every afternoon before we went home and that book lit a fire for me.
My imagination and creativity were sparked. That was the start of my love of books. I always enjoyed the prescribed reading in high school, and university and when things get busy and stressful I always have a book I'm reading for enjoyment on the go.
GP: Where is the club and how is it meeting?
KC: We are meeting at Tony Onions Park on the third weekend of every month. I will be posting notices on the Marulan & District Community Noticeboard Facebook group. If restrictions change outdoor events we will host catch-ups via zoom to discuss the book.
Our next catchup is at Tony Onions Park on George Street in Marulan at 9:30am on February 19.
GP: Where/ how can people get involved?
KC: Come along to a catchup, all are welcome. Or reach out on a post on the noticeboard, I'm happy to answer all questions.
January's book is Less by Andrew Sean Greer
GP: Ok let's finish with the hardest question. What are you favourite books?
KC: I have so many favourites but here are a few I've read multiple times.
Young adult - the Deltora Quest series by Emily Rodda, the Harry Potter series by J.K Rowling and Heartstopper series by Alice Oseman.
Adult - Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë, Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier and Moon called by Patricia Briggs.
