Staff shortfall caused by more than just Omicron, says chamber president
As hospitality and retail businesses struggle to open during what should be the biggest month of their year, Southern Highlands Chamber of Commerce president Steve Horton believes the situation has been brewing for months, if not years. He has pointed to a range of reasons - including the dearth of overseas workers due to ongoing restrictions regarding travel, as well as a long-term lack of affordable accommodation in the region - that have combined with the present Omicron wave to knock workers out.
No supply shortage for local producers, small businesses as supermarket shelves remain bare
While large chain supermarkets grapple with empty shelves and delivery delays, local stores across the Southern Highlands and Tablelands are brimming with fresh produce. Highland Meats Mittagong manager Pete Lenehan said there was plenty of stock for smaller independent businesses.
Goulburn and Wollondilly MPs give a RATs
While the general public search high and low for a Rapid Antigen Test, State MPs have received free testing kits, a move described as "stupid" by the Minister for Transport, David Elliott. Minister for Local Government and Goulburn MP Wendy Tuckerman has donated her supply of RATs to Upper Lachlan Shire Council.
Australia Day celebrations go virtual as 2022 parade cancelled
For the third year in a row, the Australia Day parade and markets held in the historic village of Berrima has been cancelled. Wingecarribee Shire Council will proceed with a virtual ceremony on January 26 due to the continued uncertainty surrounding COVID-19.
Heroes of '71 return to Moss Vale
The Moss Vale Dragons Under 18 side of 1971 will celebrate the 50-year reunion of their 1971 grand final victory in February. While not everyone will be present at the reunion, organiser Terry Ashby said it will be good to catch up with some old faces, even if they are missing a bit of hair.
Highlands musical duo out to spread the love with second album
The past two years will seem to many like something of a blip in time but for local musicians Luke Johnson and Michelle Morgan, it's been non-stop. Luke has just released his second album in 12 months, Little Worlds, with wife Michelle once again collaborating and staring on piano.
