Chelsea's turnover increased to PS416.8m ($A774.8m) from PS4387.8m ($A8,156.4m) the previous year, due to their Champions League triumph and to income carried forward from the extension of the 2019-20 season into the 2020-21 financial year.

With most matches played behind closed doors due to COVID-19 regulations matchday income fell significantly with commercial revenue recording a modest decline.

"Had it not been for the match-day impact of the pandemic, we are confident we would have achieved record turnover this year," chairman Bruce Buck said in a statement

"The strength, stability and long-term approach of our financial operation means our revenue streams remain strong, however COVID-19 will continue to have an impact going into the next financial year as our commercial operations resume normal activities."

Chelsea said the only revenue stream that has shown a year-on-year increase is broadcasting revenue which has jumped around 50 per cent. Premier League domestic revenues have stayed flat but overseas deals have increased, plus there was an uplift from their European run.

Since the accounting period ended Chelsea say they have signed three players for a total of PS109.7m ($A204m) - Romelu Lukaku, Marcus Bettinelli and midfielder Saul Niguez on loan, while selling 13 players for a combined PS103.7m ($A193m).

Chelsea say that the company owes PS1 billion ($A1.9 billion) to Fordstam Limited - a company owned by Roman Abramovich - and "related companies" and "is reliant on Fordstam Limited for its continued financial support". It says Fordstam has indicated support will continue "for the foreseeable future".

Thomas Tuchel's team are second in the table on 42 points after 20 matches, eight points behind Manchester City. They host third-placed Liverpool, who have a game in hand, on Sunday.

They are also into the knock-out stages of the Champions League and the League Cup semi-finals. They are yet to begin their FA Cup campaign.
