But first he's keen to lift the BBL trophy.

Behrendorff looms as a key plank in the Scorchers' title bid this summer, especially with Jhye Richardson struck out due to international duties and England international Tymal Mills to miss the early rounds due to quarantine.

Injuries, international commitments, and quarantine hurdles mean the Scorchers will be missing a host of their best players for their season-opening clash with the Brisbane Heat at Optus Stadium on Wednesday.

Star allrounder Mitch Marsh (Australia A), Josh Inglis (Australia A), Richardson, Mills, and Lance Morris (side strain) will be among the absentees.

Behrendorff was recently sidelined with a hip injury and then a virus, but he's back to full fitness and ready to rip in against the Heat.

The 31-year-old has high hopes the Scorchers can rebound from last season's 27-run grand final loss to the Sydney Sixers and go all the way in 2021-22.

But once the BBL ends, Behrendorff has his eyes set on making a long-awaited return to Sheffield Shield ranks.

Behrendorff's last Shield appearance came in November, 2017, but a return to red-ball cricket is now a real possibility thanks to the career-saving back surgery he underwent two years ago.

"That's on the cards," Behrendorff said of a Shield return.

"It's been a while between drinks in four-day cricket. The boys joke that I'm pretty allergic to the red ball now.

"It's been a gradual process post surgery to continually build up.

"They (the surgeons) put my back together quite nicely and it feels as strong as ever.

"The really exciting thing for me is I haven't really had to worry about my back too much now.

"I'm able to just focus on my skills and training and able to get everything out of it, and not really feel limited or hampered by that."

The Scorchers may be forced to play the bulk of their games on the road this BBL season due to WA's tough border stance.

Despite that likely hurdle, Behrendorff is aiming high.

"It's pretty simple isn't it, to win the trophy," Behrendorff said of his hopes and aims.

"We had a pretty good season last year.

"For us it's about playing carefree cricket and taking the positive option, and making sure that from the get go we're looking to do that to put ourselves in the best position to have a crack of winning the trophy."
