The not-for-profit organisation's initiative Give Where You Live has allowed Highlanders to see what can make a difference vulnerable individuals on a weekly basis.

The program was launched in September this year, and has already raised thousands of dollars and donated many items to people in need.

Residents can donate items, fund for items to be purchased by charities, or give time to help others over the festive period as part of GIVIT's Christmas appeal.

"We are trying to get the community aware and supporting locally, to give where you live and raise awareness," said GIVIT's NSW engagement officer Kirsty Bender.

Danielle Johns from Home Start Family Services in Bowral has been using Give Where You Live for months and said the platform has allowed people to provide items that "people don't realise can change people's lives."

"It is good energy flowing through the community," the program coordinator said.

"We get the community involved and are having these conversations."

Mrs Johns encouraged Highlanders to donate items for teenagers and young adults as Christmas presents.

"So often charities receive large donations of toys and gifts for young children, however we never receive donations for their older siblings or teens living out of home," she said.

"We desperately need donations of gift cards, gift vouchers, perfume or aftershave to place in Christmas hampers for teenagers.

"Everybody loves unwrapping."

Give Where You Live is a collaborative effort between GIVIT and the Southern Highlands Foundation (SHF).

"The community need to hear different perspectives," said SHF community liaison and administrative officer Bridget Cosyn.

"It is more than just hampers at Christmas."
