Highlanders have the opportunity to donate gifts for all members of the family until Christmas Eve.
"It means we get to help people in need, it's a good foundation to get people involved and excited for Christmas," Kmart wishing tree champion Crystal Tonkin-Bindley said.
"The goal is there is no reason for everyone to miss out at Christmas this year," said Salvation Army officer in charge of the Southern Highlands Jake Horton.
"There's a whole season of Christmas, not just a day."
Kmart tree champion Bronwyn Hogan said it was important to think about gifts that could be used beyond Christmas, and recommended gift cards.
"It can go to adults and be used for things people really need and the essential items like linen and food," she said.
Other practical gifts that customers can provide include books, school supplies, head phones and everyday essentials like towels, and socks.
Mrs Hogan encouraged people to also think of gifts for teenagers and adults because most items that have been put under the tree have been for young children.
"A little thought can go a long way," she said.
Gifts can be dropped under the wishing tree at the entry of the store.
Highlanders can also provide financial contributions through a gold coin donation, at the self-checkouts and by scanning QR codes in stores or online.
Coin donations can be made until the end of January.
"When you help families even just giving back, you put good out there, you get good back," said Kmart Hub manager Samantha Favot.
The Kmart Wishing Tree Appeal has been supporting families across Australia since 1987, and collected more than eight million gifts since it began.
Over 400,000 gifts and almost $300,000 in funds have been collected annually, and it is the longest running Christmas gift appeal in the country.
