Regardless of whether they are sharing the latest sporting successes, promoting local businesses, celebrating the achievements or efforts of an individual, charity or organisation, or inspiring memories through history, local newspapers create connectivity.
Even more importantly those stories and pictures become a historic record of the people, places and activities that have shaped a region.
This is something the Southern Highland News has been doing for more than 60 years.

In the wake of COVID lockdowns and restrictions this connectivity is more important than ever. It is needed to reinstate a sense of normality in our community and make a record of how we ease out of a strange time which is certain to be a key point in our history. We need to make a record of this time for future generations, while re-engaging this generation.
The Southern Highland News team of reporters is more keen than ever to share the stories and photographs of the region. We are eager to hear from our readers about what they are doing and why, and how they are transitioning into a post-lockdown world.
In fact, we have launched a new initiative entirely focussed on capturing this significant time in all our lives.
Our focus is on 'our people', 'our businesses', 'our future', 'our history', 'our places', and our opportunities to 'meet the locals'.
The initiative will kick off on November 8 with the intention to publish, online, a story from one of these categories each day of the week. Select stories will also be featured in our printed editions.
While we are eager to share the stories we are also looking to the community for story and photo suggestions. These can be made through our online portal at www.southernhighlandnews.com.au, go to the community section, then click on the 'send us your story' tab.
