On September 14 the council truck was picking up domestic waste in Willow Vale when along the route the driver noticed smoke coming from the garbage chute of the truck.

The waste had caught fire and on advice from Fire and Rescue NSW the driver dumped the load on the road. Firefighters attended and put out the fire. The driver was unhurt and the truck was undamaged.
A council spokesperson said the fire was caused by hydrochloric acid thrown in with domestic waste. The acid reacted with the waste causing the fire.
They said the waste was cleaned up at the site with a backhoe and a truck.
Chemical waste can be thrown out at the Resource Recovery Centre or during the annual free Chemical Clean Out Day. Visit www.wsc.nsw.gov.au/Facilities/Community-Recycling-Centre for more information.
