Wingecarribee Shire Council has combed the Southern Highlands for crooning koalas to join them in a world-first Koala Karaoke Party.

The party will include an online community event featuring a Q and A with team members from the Southern Highlands Koala Conservation Project, results from the 2020 Koala Karaoke Bioacoustic Monitoring Survey and an online karaoke sing-a-long.
The council's environment officer and part-time marsupial roadie Margot Law explained the idea behind the koala sing-a-long.
"Spring is a particularly busy month for koalas looking for mates," she said.
"Eligible bachelor koalas will announce their availability to potential partners and warn off competition by bellowing or singing from treetops."
"Hearing them sing is one way in which the Southern Highlands Koala Conservation Project can calculate annual koala population trends and compare the results to climate and land use data.
"We have microphones listening for koalas all over the Wingecarribee Shire, from Kangaloon to Wombeyan Caves and Balmoral to Wingello."
Throwing the Zoom party is Rockwiz host and Bowral local Julia Zemiro.
"We're absolutely thrilled Julia has agreed to join us to help spread the message about koala conservation," Margot said.
Joining Julia will be koala experts from Wingecarribee Shire Council and the NSW Department of Planning, Industry and Environment.
The Southern Highlands Koala Conservation Project is funded by Wingecarribee Shire Council's Environment Levy and the NSW Government's Saving Our Species Program and NSW Koala Strategy.
The Southern Highlands Koala Conservation Project's inaugural Koala Karaoke Party will be held on Zoom from 7.00pm on Tuesday September 28, 2021.
