Slovakia contained World Footballer of the Year Robert Lewandowski as they beat 10-man Poland 2-1 for a perfect start into their Euro 2020 campaign.
Slovakia led in the 18th minute from an own goal by Poland goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny after a shot from Robert Mak.
Poland levelled seconds after the restart from Karol Linetty but Milan Skriniar volleyed Slovakia's winner in the 68th minute of the Group E opener in St Petersburg, after Poland's Grzegorz Krychowiak was dismissed for a second bookable offence.
Led by former Napoli star Marek Hamsik, Slovakia were more efficient and dangerous than the Poles who with their superstar Lewandowski only made a real impression early in the second half.
Poland now face an uphill battle if they want to reach the quarter-finals as in 2016, with their next match on Saturday against contenders Spain in Seville.
Slovakia, who made the last 16 on their debut four years ago, stay in St Petersburg for a Friday date with Sweden.
