Founded in 2020, the club is an amalgamation of Moss Vale Dragons and Bowral Kookaburras in the seniors, and Moss Vale, Bowral and Robertson Spuddies in the juniors.
Due to the COVID-disrupted 2020 season that impacted almost all community sport, the Storm faithful were ready to kick off their heels and celebrate the wonderful community spirit for which the club is already known.
The Storm committee worked hard to make the night a success, from raffle items, like a sack of famous Robo spuds to silent bidding auction items such as a corporate box to see the Dragons at Wollongong Showground, assisting with fundraising efforts.
Local member for Wollondilly, Nathaniel Smith MP, welcomed guests and shared some of his own memories from his footy playing days.
Club junior and senior presidents, Matthew Burke and Peter Howard, along with deputy president Chris Shea, outlined some of the successes the Storm has already enjoyed and noted some ambitious goals the club is targeting in 2021 and beyond. Robertson Rugby League Club stalwart Warwick Hill was also in attendance.
It was affirming to see so many of the club's sponsors in attendance. Their generosity was acknowledged and applauded by all present.
Local junior, former Parramatta Eel and now Dragons prop Daniel Alvaro gave generously of his time to participate in an enlightening question and answer session, compared by local emcee Col Munro.
A fantastic video presentation of the founding clubs that featured interviews with Moss Vale life member Paul Maloney and Bowral Life member Graeme Drewe, outlining their history and their support for the new Southern Highlands Rugby League Club, was very well received.
The evening's stars, however, were undoubtedly Robertson junior, former Eels, NSW and Kangaroo backrower, Nathan Hindmarsh, and his comedic partner in crime, former Roosters, NSW and Kangaroos forward, Brian Fletcher. Known to many as 'Hindy and Fletch' from Fox Sports NRL, the duo had the Storm community in fits of laughter as they shared tales of their playing days, overseas representative tours and current work in the rugby league media.
More than just a place for footy, the Storm is a welcoming environment for boys and girls, women and men and all Highlanders who love the game of rugby league. Storm supporters love the supportive atmosphere and seeing players develop their footballing talents while contributing back to the broader Highlands community.
