Backyard Beekeeping Bowral

- Saturday April 3, 2021 10 am to 11:30 am
Get suited up and visit a local hive with Hamish Ta-me.
The Backyard Beekeeping event will include a quick look over the hives from a distance and a honey tasting event with fresh scones and tea.
The honey tasted at the event all comes from the same hives taken at different times of the year, including bushfire honey, early spring honey and honey that's a week old. Following the morning tea you will get to 'suit up' in a professional sting proof suit and collect leave and bark to light a smoker.
You will get to visit the hives and be shown the different styles of honey collection and the process of a standard inspection.
You will need fully enclosed shoes to be able to do this. Ideally leather boots. Everything else is provided. Also, keep in mind that we "smoke" the hive and you will end up smelling of eucalyptus smoke.
In this experience, you will be walking down my backyard in a bee suit and gloves. The suit covers you from ankles to wrists and includes a hat and veil. The only thing you need to wear is fully enclosed shoes.
All bookings are through AiBNB Experiences which covers insurance etc.
There are two options for the beekeeping workshops. a 90minute session costing $90 per person https://bit.ly/airbeenbee and a 2 x hour session costing $128 focusing on the Flow Hive and harvesting honey which you get to take home. http://bit.ly/harvesthoney.

Join a local beekeeper for a unique school holiday experience as your kids learn about the life cycle of these amazing creatures and the important part they play in our food production.
We meet at Hamish's place in Bowral and start with morning tea and a honey tasting where we get to try honey from different times of the year and see the difference in colour, viscosity and flavour.
We then go through the life cycle of a bee and the ways the colony respond to the seasons. After the theory and some worksheets we suit up in professional beekeeping suits and gloves and get up close and personal with the bees! Parents are welcome to sit in on this experience and watch the kids amongst the hives from a safe distance. Group sizes are limited to four children at any one session.
In this experience, the kids will be walking down Hamish's backyard in a bee suit and gloves. The suit covers you from ankles to wrists and includes a hat and veil. The only thing your kids need is fully enclosed shoes. A pair of leather boots is ideal.
There are a few steps and some uneven ground. We may "smoke" the hives so kids may end up smelling of eucalyptus smoke. This activity is best suited to 8-12 year olds. Older children can join the adult sessions.
