A notice of motion was put forth by Councillor Ian Scandrett suspend the recruitment process for the new general manager so it can be decided by a newly elected council in September.
Candidate Rachel Russell addressed councillors in public forum in regards to the notice of motion with a poem she had written herself.
Ms Russell through her poem indicated that legal advice had been sought over the appointment of a new general manager.
Councillors could not ask questions to Ms Russell in public forum.
The meeting closed at 8 pm before councillors could debate the notice of motion. It will be next heard on the March 11 meeting.
You can read Ms Russell's poem below.
Poem by Rachel Russell - Independent candidate.
Gentlemen I'm not here to judge you on choices,
Simply here to request you listen to voices.
I'm not here to tell you exactly what to do
Hopefully just guide so we can start anew,
Just cause something can be done doesn't make it right
And we have fresh council elections in sight.
We need your support now: this isn't all about you.
I'm here representing many, not simply a few.
And that's what our role is on council I'm told
To represent our community, may I be so bold
As to humbly suggest this appointment now
Is not in the best interests of this Shire and that's how
We're expected to act if we're to comply,
With oaths of office. And so let me try
To bring the perspective that there is no fear
That in view of the fact that big changes are near
Legal advice from QCs now gives you an out.
Another temporary appointment can be made with no flout
Of your obligations to due process and law so you see
That recruitment can be delayed, and let be!
Let's not get bogged down in the habits of old
Let's wait and see how elections unfold.
But be warned should you not heed advice spoken here
There is a great danger your good names you'll smear.
Voter backlash at elections will remind you
That you chose unwisely despite the fact that you knew
That your actions were not warranted or for the public best
So right here, gentlemen, is the litmus test.
Please show us you can let go of ego, hubris.... pride,
And instead focus on what you must know inside.
You have had a turn at your choice of GM,
You have now gotten to make it time and again.
I believe we can trust that you will let go
Of the belief that you will always be running this show.
With that knowledge in mind, I ask you to think
Because here and now we are right at the very brink
Of a four year contract.. it is argued you see
Will not reflect our diversity.
