It ended in a one shot victory to Robin Staples.
Saturday, November 28 at Bowral Bowling Club, with the temperature well into the 30 degree mark, the final of the senior singles turned out to be a magnificent match with Robin Staples taking out the match on the 36th end with a one shot victory.
At the finish of the match Robin Staples defeated Mike Holmwood 31-30.
Staples had a 14-7 lead after 13 ends and was not allowing Holmwood into the match.
But, then the game started to change with Holmwood starting to get in a rhythm and out drawing Staples that after 18 ends the gap had been narrowed to 15-13 still in Staples favour.
After 24 ends Staples had a 21-17 lead.
But one could feel that Holmwood was starting to feel more confident and and on the 26th end had taken the lead 22-21.
On the 29th end Holmwood picked up four shots to go to a 28-22 lead and within grasp of the title.
With both players being experienced players the next few ends would test all their skill.
On the 34th end Holmwood still had the lead 30-28 and required one shot for victory and Staples needed three shots for victory.
On the 35th end Staples played a perfect draw shot on to the jack, Holmwood had an on shot that clipped the jack, but not enough to get the shot scores 30-29 in favour of Staples.
On the 36th end which proved to be the last.
Firstly Holmwood held shot, then Staples moved the jack to hold two shots.
Holmwood with his last bowl had a running shot and missed by a whisker.
This gave the title to Staples by one shot.
As men's club president Bob Crowley who marked the match said, "throughout out the match bowls were of the highest standard."
Congratulations to Robin Staples for winning the seniors title and to Mike Holmwood the runner up.
For two senior players to slug it out in heatwave conditions over 36 ends was a achievement on its own.
Many a younger player would have retired to the bar for a cool drink.
A great match well done.
