Southern Highlands couple Sophie and Steve Westlake have created Virosol, a commercial grade spray which "kills COVID and 99 per cent of germs".
The product was approved by the Theraputic Goods Administration (TGA) in recent weeks.
The disinfectant has been well received by consumers, with 8000 bottles sold in the first 24 hours of a soft product launch.
The interest in the disinfectant has grown, with "strong and consistent" sales.
Mrs Westlake, a scientist, said the family has started its search for stockists.
Earning a TGA approval is no mean feat and the process normally takes between 12 to 18 months.
However Mrs Westlake said the process was faster for the family's product.
"The TGA were terrific to work with. They really did help expedite the process," she said.
"We worked tirelessly for months prior to TGA approval. We also worked with an international lab in Silverwater."
The process included almost 2000 tests and extensive work with the TGA to review all of the tests.
Mr Westlake, the owner of a medical reporting company, said the couple intended to do further testing, in order to support more claims about the product.
"It's a much broader product than what we're advertising at the moment," he said.
A new line of defence
The family's goal was to create an additional line of defence against COVID.
They stressed the product was not intended to be a substitute for social distancing and hand washing.
The product will be particularly helpful for people like Mr Westlake, who lives with an autoimmune condition called myasthenia gravis.
"For me if I caught COVID it could be quite catastrophic," he said.
"It became paramount to produce this. There are many people like me."
The couple's children were involved with the process, with duties including marketing, logo design and product naming.
15-year-old Emilie-Rose, 13-year-old Ethan, nine-year-old Winter and two-year-old Sunday also saw how the disinfectant was created.
The spray is suitable for both household and commercial use, specifically designed for use on non-porous, hard surfaces.

The family will also open a warehouse at Unit 30, 17 Old Dairy Close, Moss Vale at 10am on Monday.
