Executive director for the Illawarra Business Chamber Adam Zarth said the parent organisation Business NSW recommended that the Federal and State Governments sign up to a six percent unemployment rate target.r.
"We are pleased the Government has recognised our call, and has committed that business support will continue until the unemployment rate and private demand recovers," Mr Zarth said.
"We have consistently emphasised the importance of getting people back into work to minimise the human-level impacts of COVID-19.
"A six percent unemployment rate target will give the wider Illawarra community confidence that the government support will be there to help them retain their jobs, and therefore the confidence to keep spending locally and supporting our businesses."
Mr Zarth said that the Single Touch Payroll date showed that more than 1000 new job were created in the fortnight ending September 5.
"It indicates that we are trending in the right direction regionally," he said.
"This is clear demonstration of our strong, diversified regional economy at work, which is driven by a highly skilled local workforce.
"The Illawarra business community looks forward to measures contained in the upcoming Commonwealth and state budgets to deliver a jobs-led recovery.
"Payroll tax and other cost impediments faced by employers taking on staff must be looked at as part of any reform."
