And that has now become a reality for Parramatta prop Daniel Alvaro.
Late last week, Alvaro was contacted about joining up with the Warriors on a short term loan deal.
He and George Jennings joined the New Zealand camp this week, and having had only a short amount of time on the field in first grade this year, Alvaro said he was glad to get the chance to play.
"I'm just really grateful for the opportunity and looking to put in a good performance for the boys.
"I'm excited to play some footy. I was really pumped when I heard George was coming. It's easier when you've got people you know."
While Parramatta currently sits third on the NRL ladder, it has been a tough season for the Warriors, who sit in 13th spot.
Many have been away from their families for an extended period of time, as well as dealing with injuries and other players who have returned home.
But Alvaro said the team had been "really welcoming" and seemed really positive despite the difficult year they have faced on and off the field.
"I feel at home already."
While he will spend only a short time with the Warriors, Alvaro said his wife Hannah planned to join him this weekend.
And he plans to make the most of this opportunity, to learn what he can from New Zealand's senior players.
"There's a few guys here that have a lot of experience. I'll see how they do things and soak up all I can from them."
He may be in a different environment to the one he was just a week ago, but Alvaro said he felt he would adapt quickly.
"Everyone runs the same type of plays, so it's more learning all the boys names in the squad [and getting to know them]."
The Warriors next match is against the West Tigers on Friday night at the SCG.
