The Royal Commission was established on February 20 in response to the extreme 2019-20 bushfire season, which resulted in loss of life, property and wildlife and environmental destruction.
The Commission is examining coordination and accountability arrangements, preparedness for, response to, and recovery from disasters as well as improving resilience and adapting to changing climatic conditions and mitigating the impact of natural disasters.
While further hearings are planned, the Commission has already made significant progress with its inquiry, conducting hearings over 25 days with appearances by 226 witnesses.
The Commission has also received 1772 submissions and 171 responses to its issues papers.
