On Sunday June 7, Kevin Wellings, 88-years-old, was found near Wingecarribee River on Moss Vale Road, five kilometres from his Harbison self-care unit in the early hours of the morning by a cyclist.
Mr Wellings had suffered a mild stroke and was disoriented.
His brother Ross Wellings said Kevin had wandered off in his pyjamas and that Kevin had told him he was going home to Moss Vale.
"He walked five kilometres from Harbison Memorial Village and a cyclist found him, put a jacket on him and called the ambulance," he said.
"When he was admitted to hospital, they contacted Harbison, who in turn contacted me.
"His condition was very bad and we were told he wasn't going to leave the hospital."
Mr Wellings was placed in the high dependency ward at Bowral and District Hospital where he passed away on June 24, 2020.
Ross Wellings said the staff at the high dependency ward at Bowral and District Hospital were "absolutely amazing".
They were wonderful people and they kept in touch with me daily," he said.
"They were terrific."
Mr Ross Wellings said he wanted to acknowledge the cyclist and replace their jacket in gratitude.
"It really would have been horrible to have thought that our brother at 88 had died beside Moss Vale Road," he said.
"Dying peacefully in hospital is one thing but dying from exposure from the cold besides Moss Vale Road would have been awful."
Mr Wellings said that he and his sisters were touched by people's recollections of his brother Kevin.
"We want to acknowledge how kind and considerate people were to my 88-year-old brother," he said.
"Anyone who had dealings with my brother commented on what a charming old man he was.
"We would like to acknowledge the good work by G Bevan Funerals. They were wonderful, everything was perfect.
"We would also like to acknowledge St Jude's Church, Graham Shultz was very helpful.
"We had a wonderful service for Kevin on July 3."
Kevin and his partner Tom had been together for nearly 60 years until Tom's death in 2018 and lived in Moss Vale for more than 30 years.
Kevin was involved in the local community in the decorative and fine arts society, with the local historical museum and the local church.
Kevin was a gardener and worked on quite a few of the gardens in the Highlands.
Now Kevin's siblings are looking for the person who helped their brother.
