Geoscience Australia said the event happened about 9.51pm at a depth of 10km and was mostly felt around the West Dapto area and north eastern part of Shellharbour.
The government agency fielded about 47 'felt reports' from Illawarra residents, while hundreds more took to social media to discuss the rumble.
Residents from the southern suburbs of the Illawarra said they had felt their houses shaking.
"Big bang Burke Road. Shook the house, any ideas?" a member of the Dapto Random Bang Identification group reported.
Other people said they thought it was a coal train coming to an abrupt stop in Mount Saint Thomas and that the "house shook and teacup rattled".
