In this new world of working from home and social distancing it's more important than ever that every Australian has access to decent internet that can live up to not just work or education but also keeping us connected with the wider world.
Fast and reliable internet isn't just about knowing Netflix won't buffer (but let's face it, that's part of it), it's about being able to run your business with the confidence of knowing it isn't going to drop out and leave you high and dry.
Well this week, it seems like something has been done to give customers a leg to stand on when fighting telcos over poor connectivity.
Your right to high-speed internet is now enshrined in Australian law.
This means NBN Co will have a statutory obligation to provide broadband services that are able to achieve peak download speeds of at least 25 Megabits per second and upload speeds of at least 5 Megabits per second.
NBN Co must also provide at least 90 per cent of premises on its fixed-line network with peak broadband speeds of 50/10 Megabits per second.
While those may not be world leading speeds, they are certainly a step in the right direction, and better than the old ADSL network could achieve for most of us.
But will it really change everyday consumer's NBN experiences? Will it guarantee a reliable service with no dropouts and constant connectivity? Only time will tell I guess.
