A Department of Planning, Industry and Environment (DPIE) spokesperson said no decisions had been made about the future of the facility.
"At this stage Berrima remains a Corrective Services facility and will likely remain so for the foreseeable future," the spokesperson said.
"It is on standby as a contingency facility to be used if operational circumstances require its use.
"Corrective Services NSW has engaged with DPIE to review the Berrima site and consider potential future options for adaptive reuse of its facilities once it is no longer required for operational corrections purposes."
The Berrima Correctional Centre was re-opened in 2016 and reclassified as a women's prison in 2018.
The facility housed up to 75 inmates before it was retired.
Berrima Correctional Centre was one of several gaols that was flagged for closure late last year.
The closures were triggered by the new 1700-bed Clarence Correctional Centre, along with the expansion of existing prisons in Junee, Bathurst, Cessnock, Mid North Coast, Parklea and Windsor.
