Today, he is the creative director and an exhibiting artist at Whitewall Art Projects.
"When my wife and I saw the For Lease sign on the front gate, we both knew we had to take the project on to restore the building back to its original purpose," he said.
"It's always been a beautiful space to show in. I have great memories of showing in the gallery. It was really exciting for me."
Whitewall Art Projects is located in Berrima, at the site where the Bell Gallery once was.
But it was a longer wait than anticipated before Thomas could open the doors to the revamped space.
With the lease signed just before the COVID-19 lockdown, he had to wait another two months before he could officially open.
But it would appear that it has been worth the wait.
With a mix of both international, Australian and local artists, the Whitewall Art Project has received plenty of positive feedback from Highlanders and visitors to the region.
"There are a lot of people who have been here 10 years ago and are now rediscovering it," Thomas said.
Walking up to the gallery, Thomas said many people had been impressed by the well kept gardens, with the exterior also presenting a beautiful entry.
Visitors then enter into a "big, open, bright space" with more than 150 artworks to explore.
And no matter what your artistic inclinations, Thomas said there was a wide range of mediums from modern contemporary to more conceptual works.
There is also a collection of Australian Masters Etchings from artists such as Peter Hickey through to John Olsen and Charles Blackman.
"But it doesn't feel overcrowded. There's a lot of works but there's a flow through the works.
"The kinds of art I'm showing in the gallery are what I'd love to have in my own home. I want to bring contemporary to the country."
His goal is to bring an international level of art to the Highlands.
But his plans also include hosting "sensory showdowns" at the gallery in collaboration with other local businesses.
The first of their art, food and cultural experiences- Bubbles and Truffles- will be held at the end of July.
The Whitewall Art Projects is open Friday to Monday 10am-4pm or by appointment.
