A series of chalk artworks and supportive messages on footpaths at various locations has been putting a smile on the dial of many.

The Southern Highland News first learned about the creative pieces on the footpath near David Wood playing fields at East Bowral and on the edge of the Southern Highlands Botanic Gardens.

A story on the News website sharing pictures of the drawings and calling for the artist, or artists, to come forward yielded some surprising results.

We soon learned that similar artworks and messages had been seen at various other locations across the Wingecarribee Shire including Mittagong, Renwick, Moss Vale and Robertson.

Photographs of some beautiful messages spelt out in stone near Lake Alexandra, Mittagong, were also shared.

One family stepped up to take ownership of the colourful creations on the path near David Wood Playing Fields.

And that is when we learned that these uplifting offerings are coming from more than one person or family.

Averil Cutroni said she had been working with her two youngest children Isaac, 11, and Lucy, 8, to create the artworks and messages near David Wood Playing Fields.

"My kids and I were shocked and delighted to see your article about our chalk art," she said.

"We have so many people walking by every day and I thought it would be nice if we spread a bit of joy and positivity during these uncertain times.

"I have noticed people stopping and looking - but the most beautiful moment so far was an elderly man that was reading them and he pulled a hanky out and started wiping his eyes.

"He said that we had made his day, and the messages had brought a tear to his eye."
