Suffering probably best sums up the emotions of millions of Australians, victims of coronavirus headlines.
But the suffering of many of our athletes is depression, triggered by the anxiety of CV19 and the mass hysteria the media bathe in.
The adrenalin has ceased to flow. The mood is morose.
Australia's most debilitating illness is mental health.
I have had experiences of dealing with psychiatrists and psychologists following an over workload in 1971.
Useless.
One Macquarie Street "mind healer" told me to take a cold shower and then rub my body vigorously.
The learned advice cost me hundreds, today thousands.
So what then are the symptoms of depression?
- . Excessive tiredness.
- . Strong desire not to get out of bed.
- . Loss of interest in eating.
- . Loss of interest in self-care-washing, clothing.
- . Binge drinking.
- . Reduced willingness to concentrate, e.g.; reading.
- . Mood totally flat.
Restrictions on outdoor activity magnifies further depression.
Yes, the CV19 is a horror. Depression is the real pandemic.
I asked a friend in Bowral who suffers from depression how he copes.
He has seen all the "quacks." One or two have helped.
However, he has prescribed his own "medicine."
"The first thing I do every morning is play a video of the British comedy show, "Would I Lie To You."
"I'm guaranteed a good laugh.
"I share a house. I don't want to live alone. Company helps me.
"I have come to a stage where I try to reach out and help people who feel worthless.
"I have one chap who rings me three times a day. I wouldn't care if he called 30-times."
