As a sports commentator on Channel Nine in the early seventies I was paid O.
Yep, zero. In return of my appearances the publication I founded in 1970, Rugby League Week, received circulation rattling exposure.
Host Ron Casey plugged the eyes out of it. Fifty years later a TV network shells out $30,000 for half a day's work. Although the commentator in question has a hide thicker than Jessie's, I won't name him.
He is extremely knowledgeable, outspoken and has a playing background second to none.
But he's not worth $30,000 nor is anybody else of his ilk. The particular TV network is battling bills.
A sound of warning to the network. Be a tad more frugal. Work out the sums. Basic subscriptions to the network are around $49 per month.
In order to settle the $30,000 commentator's fee you need to sell 600 subscriptions.
The commentator pocketed $150,00 for his five days on the mike-3,000 subscriptions.
Just doesn't add up.
You may ask why do I care. Well, I enjoy their coverage of horse racing and the USPGA golf tour.
Hate to see them go by the board.
