BirdLife Southern Highlands has invited Dr Holly Parsons to address local birdwatchers and concerned members of the public in the aftermath of the recent bushfires.
Dr Parsons will not only outline how to support surviving bird populations but will address how individuals might support the cost of funding some of the restoration projects which BirdLife Australia is planning.
She will share a wealth of knowledge with more than 20 years working with birdlife.
Dr Parsons has been involved in what was originally the Birds in Backyards Program since 1999.
She brings a great understanding of the valuable role played by citizen science, environmental education and conservation projects in maintaining environmental biodiversity which in some parts of Eastern Australia is now under serious pressure.
Birdlife Southern Highlands spokesman Col Kohlhagen said the recent fires had been a defining time for this region and much of the east coast of Australia.
"The figures around wildlife death and habitat destruction are staggering and heartbreaking," he said.
"Many of us want to help, but it can be hard to know where to start and what the right thing is to do."
In her talk, Dr Parsons will outline some of the ways individuals can help birds in their own spaces to recover from these fires.
Mr Kohlhagen said that when putting out food and water or creating habitat for birds in gardens there were some pitfalls.
"We need to be wary of these so we don't inadvertently do more harm than good," he said.
"Efforts to support the recovery of our amazing bird life will not happen quickly, and Holly will also discuss some of the initial steps that BirdLife Australia is taking to understand the impact these fires have had on threatened and common birds alike."
Dr Parson's talk will be at the East Bowral Community Centre and will commence at 8.00pm on February 25, immediately following BirdLife Southern Highland's AGM.
Members of the public who would like to attend and learn more are asked to contact Peter at blsh_program @birdlife.org.au to book a spot.
