Wingecarribee Shire Council mayor Duncan Gair said council's green waste service would be suspended for at least a few days.
However he said normal yellow and red bin services had not been affected at this stage.
Mayor Gair said this service interruption would affect residents in every town and village.
"The fire is being kept under control. There are water tankers on site to spray down any flair ups," he said.
"The issue is at this stage is separating the burning material from the non-burnt material. Then extinguishing the flames so it doesn't keep spreading.
"The big thing is when you open up a smouldering pile the oxygen gets to it and up it goes again. It's going to be a slow and tedious process."
