The results of individual achievement in the UNSW ICAS Writing Competition for students in years seven to 11, completed on September 9, showcase the talent of young writers.
In the 35-minute test of writing skills, students were required to write a persuasive text on the topic, "Everyone can help to make the world a better place. Do you agree?"
Students were given no visual prompts - making it a complex task given the time limit for thinking, planning, writing and editing. Student entries were assessed by a panel of judges in the following skill areas: text purpose and structure; language choices that enhance the writing; syntax and grammar; punctuation and spelling.
The online test was undertaken by Frensham students on their personal laptops, through a secure browser that disabled their ability to use any formatting or spellcheck functions.
Year 10 students Grace Lewis and Harriet Mackie from Bowral and Mittagong with year 11 student Mia Horsfall from Mittagong achieved High Distinction results which placed them in the top one per cent in the country.
The assessment is designed to recognise and reward academic excellence. It is based on the curricula for the relevant year. Students are asked to demonstrate a deeper, integrated, and thorough level of learning.
