The school had five students recognised in the Southern Highlands Schools Excellence in Vocational Education and Training Awards held recently at the Mittagong RSL Club.
The awards are designed to recognise, reward and promote the pursuit of excellence by students completing VET subjects as part of their HSC study.
They play a significant role in encouraging young people to strive to achieve their personal best in their chosen VET pathway and to celebrate excellence in skills development.
Chevalier College offers four VET frameworks with a fifth, Business Services, being introduced in 2020.
And the results of this year's award put several Chevalier's students in the limelight with students from each of the VET subjects offered at the school achieving a VET student of the year award for their particular industry category.
Additionally, the overall 2019 VET Student of the Year award went to Chevalier student, Darcy Howard (Class of 2019).
College principal Chris McDermott said the students, their dedicated teachers and the leaders of the VET faculty were to be congratulated and thanked for their great labour of love.
Chevalier VET Students of the Year are:
- Construction - Liam Ryan-East
- Primary Industries - Darcy Howard
- Hospitality Kitchen Operations - Katherine Evans
- Hospitality Food and Beverage - Amelia Gardner
- 2019 VET Student of the Year - Darcy Howard
Mr McDermott said Chevalier College continued to strive to offer the widest possible curriculum to its students.
"More and more students who are following an academic path are seeing the advantages of including a VET course in their studies for the HSC," he said.
"Preparing young people for the post-school world requires more than an ATAR.
"Resilience, negotiation skills, people skills and a service orientated work ethic, combined with the academics, creates a highly flexible and valued future contributor to the world.
"This was highlighted at the awards night when the achievements of all the nominated students were read out.
"Chevalier College would like to express its appreciation and thanks to the many local businesses who support these courses by providing work placement and mentoring to these young people.
"The college also wishes to offer our congratulations to the VET students and staff from Bowral High School and Moss Vale High School who were honoured at the awards ceremony."
