Tennis NSW have announced the release of 15 new Tennis Australia funded roles to help clubs, coaches and councils improve the delivery of tennis in their local communities.
Findings made by Tennis Australia in its participation review found that the sport was facing a number of challenges to sustained growth in the coming years. The review found that over four million adults had expressed an interest in playing tennis and that 76% of them wished to play socially with friends and family.
It was also recognised that the sport was losing children aged between 9-14 at a higher rate of other sports. Finally, the review highlighted that there were key characteristics the running of a successful tennis facility and that too many of our clubs were not demonstrating these key characteristics.
The investment into the workforce is intended to help our clubs better identify the opportunities at a local level whilst providing them with the appropriate skills, tools and resource to help them better plan and deliver tennis locally.
Welcoming the investment being made by Tennis Australia into the sport at state level, Tennis NSW CEO Lawrence Robertson said "This is a significant day for our sport in NSW.
"We welcome the commitment and confidence Tennis Australia have shown in the Management and Staff here in NSW as we strive to meet our ambition of becoming the number one participation state in Australia," he said.
"Recent Ausplay data showed that over 340,000 people play tennis in NSW, but we recognise the opportunities that remain available to our clubs. Helping them improve their digital footprint and presence, uplifting their marketing capabilities locally and providing them with the right products and people to help them flourish each and every day.
"We remain committed to being a catalyst for change across the tennis community and this investment will go a long way in helping realise our goals."
Chris Woodland, Head of Tennis Development will oversee the new department that will include an increase in feet on the ground throughout Southern NSW and the ACT.
Mark La Brooy, has been appointed as the Regional Tennis Manager for Southern NSW and ACT.
Mark will lead a team of four Club Development Officers and one School Development Coordinator, as a team this group will be responsible for the holistic health of tennis throughout the region and provide on the ground support to our clubs, coaches and councils.
Mittagong, Bowral and Moss Vale are a part of our South East Region.
