If you have never flown a kite before, or you have and would love to get back into it - perhaps this time with your children - then the Kite Flying Workshop at Southern Highlands Botanic Gardens could be just the activity for you.
This great social activity is a wonderful addition to events at the Botanic Gardens.
The gardens' enthusiastic volunteers will be pinning their hopes on fine weather and just enough breeze on Sunday, August 11 to ensure this fun activity is a real hit.
Although the exact origin of kites is not known, it is thought they were flown in China and the Malay Archipelago, two to three thousand years ago.
The earliest written accounts of kite flying were the exploits of the Chinese general Han Hsin, Han Dynasty (206 B.C.-220 A.D.)
During one military campaign, the general was said to have had a kite flown above a besieged town to calculate the distance his army would have to tunnel to reach under the city wall.
Knowing the exact measurement, his troops surprised their enemy and were victorious.
The popularity of kite-flying has survived for thousands of years and lovers of this pastime can now enjoy a day out at the Southern Highlands Botanic Gardens, learning about and flying their own kites all while enjoying all the gardens have to offer.
There are so many good reasons to get out in the fresh air for a little fun in the great outdoors. Even if the breeze is brisk, rug up and make the most of a great time tapping in on your creativity and sense of adventure.
Provide your children with a fun option that is, non-mechanical, non-battery operated and great for inspiring the senses and nurturing the imagination.
The kite flying day at the Southern Highlands Botanic Gardens promises to be a fun day out for all the family - just remember kite flying is a pastime suitable for all ages so even the grandparents could engage in some great family time with their children and grandchildren.
The day of fun in the gardens is scheduled from 10am to 3pm and will cost $15 for the workshop of $20 for workshop plus sausage sizzle. The cost includes kite kit, construction and decorating.
Also on offer during the day will be refreshments and sausage sizzle, balloon sculpting and face painting.
Admission to the gardens is by donation. All funds raised go towards ongoing projects to develop the gardens.
