Presented each year by APRA AMCOS and the Australian Music Centre, the awards recognise achievement in the composition, performance, education and presentation of Australian art music.
Steel City Strings have been nominated for the award for excellence in a regional area for activities in 2018 and commitment to new Australian music.
Young violinist Siobhan Mewes, from Bowral, plays in the orchestra along with several other musicians who were part of a very successful recent concert at Chevalier Performing Arts Centre with the South Coast Big Band.
In 2018 the orchestra featured in the documentary The Passion of Music that was launched in Wollongong and was screened at the Empire Cinema.
Steel City Strings have supported regional composers and played the works of Southern Highlands composers Ann Carr-Boyd and Andrew Ford.
They have also performed works by Michael Barkl and Adrian Whitehall, the Phoenix Suite by Judith Stubbs from Thirroul and established Australian composers Graham Khoene and Ross Edwards.
Earlier this year the orchestra was involved in recording Ann Carr-Boyd's works for strings at the Burrawang School of Arts along with harpist Verna Lee.
