Regional illegal dumping officers are investigating cases of illegal dumping, collecting evidence that is contained in items that are left behind.
Individuals or corporations who are caught dumping will be fined.
Under the Protection of the Environment Operations Act 1997, penalties include fines of up to $2000 for individuals and $4000 for corporations who unlawfully dispose of waste on Council owned/managed lands.
Truck driver Nathan Adams was disgusted to see rubbish strewn across the side of Wombeyan Caves Road and Old Hume Highway as he drove past.
Items such as a helmet, cardboard boxes, clothes, car parts and spray cans were dumped in the parking bay near Wombeyan Caves Road.
"It's a regular place [for illegal dumping]," he said.
"The parking bay can be pretty bad."
According to a council spokesperson illegal dumping remains an ongoing issue for Wingecarribee Shire Council.
"There's no excuse for it and it is simply a lazy alternative to the responsible disposal of waste," they said.
"Last year 445 illegal dumping incidents were reported in our shire.
"At the end of the day it's left to the community to foot the clean-up bill.
"People who dump asbestos or other hazard materials because they don't want to pay at the [Resource Recovery Centre] are putting people at risk.
"A fair chunk of the fees at the RRC go towards EPA costs. The RRC doesn't make money from these services."
The RRC accepts a number of items such as spray paint cans, batteries, x-rays, gas bottles, oil computers, printers, toasters and other electrical items free of charge.
Rubbish from the RRC is transported out of Wingecarribee Shire as there is no landfill in the area.
Council's regional illegal dumping project officer Sara Rich said that while illegal dumping was an eyesore, it could also be dangerous.
Residents who witness incidents of illegal dumping are urged to contact council rangers on 4868 088. Any information received will be held in strict confidence.
