Travelling with your cat may seem unusual but a growing community of people are adventuring with their feline friends. Adventurous kitties require a backpack for transport, harnesses and a keen sense of adventure.
Catexplorer is a company that helps people find the best feline friendly places across the globe from bars, pubs and restaurants to hikes and hotels.
Catexplorer founder Hasara Lay said the trend had been around for a while but social media had encouraged more and more people to go out and try it.
"We have a huge community that goes cat exploring," Hasara said.
The chief explorer said the first thing was to determine if your cat was the right candidate.
Hasara said if your cat liked to sit indoors and was content with routine they might not be the right fit.
Endlessly curious kitties that love going outside and run to the door will enjoy traveling.
Trained fur-babies can go for walks, hikes, visit the beach and even go kayaking.
"Everyday I am finding new things people are doing [with their cats] all around the world," Hasara said.
"There are some really adventurous people that go stand up paddle boarding and kayaking with their cats."
Hasara said she, and her kitties, loved going to the many cat-friendly cafes and wineries in the Southern Highlands.
"We received such awesome and lovely comments as we walked down Bong Bong Street with our cat," Hasara said.
"When it came to accommodation we found so many places willing to take us in."
The key is to slowly introduce your cat to their harness and the outside world.
"Exploring helps [cats] use up energy and gives them exercise," Hasara said.
"They become a lot more interactive and the bond between the two of you becomes stronger.
"I'm an introvert... but one of my cats loves to go up and say hi to people so I am forced to talk and come out of my comfort zone, [as a result] I've met some incredible people."
Hasara said Bowral was a great place to start and offered cat-friendly cafes, pubs and a variety of walking tracks.
"It was really nice to see pubs that were pet-friendly," she said.
"You can take your cat along and have a beer and a burger, they try and steal parts of your burger but they do enjoy it."
