The highly improvised show will head to Mittagong RSL on June 28 and will follow newlyweds Stacey and Will as they navigate misbehaving family and uninvited visitors at a surprised wedding reception thrown by the brides mum.
Southern Highland News had a chat with three members of the cast of 'Confetti and Chaos', Monique Lewis-Reynolds, Nerine Skinner and Nicholas Richard about what they love about the show and what the audience can expect.
What excites you about this show?
Monique: There's something about it being based on a wedding reception. We all know of those weddings where something outrageous or embarrassing happens and that is what this is all about - the utter humour and calamity that happens when you throw people together from two different families and you get to see how funny and crazy that mixture of different people can be. I play Lynn who is the Mother of the Bride. And I also get to play another character, Marge, who is the aunty of the Groom.
Nerine: I loved the idea of an immersive wedding reception going wrong and the truth behind such a ridiculous situation. The idea of a beautiful wedding and the lead up to that perfect day and then that being undermined by your own family and events that shouldn't take place really fascinated me.
I really like the fact we have the ability to improvise with an audience, therefore allowing us the freedom to have a totally different show each night according to each audience. I also loved the idea of coming on board and giving my own ideas on character development as well as devising new moments within the plot.
Nicholas Richard: I'm looking forward to sharing this show with an Australian audience.I think it's the kind of show we Australians can really relate to and get behind. There are so many moments in the show and aspects of the characters that have a wonderful and sometimes cringe-worthy familiarity to them, in the same way that the characters of Kath and Kim or the Kerrigan family from The Castle strike a chord with us. I really believe the audience will love the characters of Confetti and Chaos.
How did you get involved?
M: I've been been working with Interactive Theatre International for about three years now, playing Sybil in Faulty Towers The Original Dining Experience. I like getting to do something that's new, immersive theatre is fantastic. I love working with the company. They do some incredible work and I get to work with these incredible actors in our team. It's just exciting to explore yet another show with them and to do one that's such great comedy.
N: I went to the audition and remember being thrown into the deep end and asked to improvise for ages. I normally freak out at auditions but the idea of improvising and bringing creativity to the space really helped me relax and I had one of the best most fun auditions I have ever had!
NR: I've been working with Interactive Theatre International for almost one year now as 'Manuel' in their Faulty Towers the Original Dining Experiencing show.
What should audience members look forward to?
M: Within the show Confetti and Chaos we get lots of opportunity for improvisation. It all depends on what comes from the audience members. Sometimes people can have quite crazy reactions to the show and their laughter, or even their comments, will prompt us to respond us in different ways and that can sometimes send us in quite a different direction from how the show would usually unfold.
N: A 3 course meal and a big mixture of truth and silliness all wrapped up in a wedding reception.. Imagine everything that shouldn't happen at a wedding.
NR: The audience can look forward to an extremely engaging and hilarious show. The script and performers are absolutely fantastic and the fact the audience is in the fourth wall means the audience can't help but get caught up in the drama and hilarity. It's a little bit like a 'choose your own adventure' in that you can be a fly on the wall watching it all happen or involve yourself as a character in the show.
How do you prepare for each show?
M: There are a lot of quite outrageous things that happen in Confetti and Chaos that will definitely get some fairly peculiar responses from audience members. You just never know what those reactions will be and that will give us a lot of scope for giggles along the way. This really is improvising at its true height. You just never know what' going to come out of an audience member's mouth and how you might respond to it at the time.
N: By going over the voice for each of the characters, a mark through of physical moments that have to be set in the space in order for the audience to be able to see everything and a sing through of some songs to test the acoustics and sound levels.
NR: To be honest I talk to myself, in character, a lot. Sometimes it's just running lines under my breath and imagining the other character responding but more often than not, it's just rambling to myself about an old thing.
What is your favorite thing about performing?
M: I love being right in the midst of an audience every single night - really almost touching their laughter and their joy - as I'm playing in a room where there's not that distance of the stage
N: Being with a group of lovely actors who are all just as committed to giving their best for this brand new fresh audience. We all want the audience to have the best night and that is the most important thing, so it pulls me through fore sure.I am so excited about coming out to Australia. It is my first time here and I don't know how to take it all in, it is so big!
NR: It's a bit of a cliche, but I love to make people laugh. We all love to bring joy to the audience through entertainment. The whole idea is to take our audience to another place and time for a little while to forget about everything else and bring a whole new experience in to their reality. To watch a person absolutely lose themselves in a fit of laughter is such a wonderful thing to witness and it's a beautiful thing to give - it brings joy to both parties.
Tickets to see 'Confetti and Chaos' cost $75 dollars and includes a three course meal. Tickets are available to purchase at Mittagong RSL.
