The Mount Gibraltar Heritage Reserve Stone Stairway repair project has been completed.
It is open for inspection and admiration and will be a popular alternative pedestrian route to the Bowral Lookout Picnic Area and walking track network.
Mount Gibraltar Landcare and Bushcare Group acting secretary Jane Lemann said stonemasons, J and J Stonewall Constructions had done an excellent job maintaining the heritage and environmental components of the Bowral Trachyte steps.
The stairs were built in the 1930s in a depression relief program from the Mount Gibraltar quarries, and fell into disrepair when the quarries closed.
They were uncovered by bush regeneration works and have now been restored to last for many years as part of the Heritage Quarries Circuit walk.
Mount Gibraltar Landcare and Bushcare volunteers obtained grant funding for $106,000 that was managed by the Wingecarribee Landcare and Bushcare Network Inc.
Approvals were obtained from the NSW Heritage Council and Wingecarribee Shire Council and funds came from the volunteers, the council, Southern Highlands Foundation, NSW Government Clubs Grants for Infrastructure and the Bowral Commonwealth Bank.
