The NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) in conjunction with Wingecarribee Shire Council will accept unwanted chemicals as part of its annual Chemical CleanOut program this Saturday.
Residents can drop off their unwanted chemicals free of charge at council's Moss Vale Works Depot from 9am to 3.30pm.
Council's environment and sustainability manager Barry Arthur said the clean-up has continued to be popular with residents.
"Each year we seem to get 50 per cent of first time users and some people come back every year," he said.
"It's a really easy process, people don't even have to get out of the cars. It's a safe disposal and a good opportunity to dispose of anything that's been accumulating in their garage of laundries."
Last year 382 people participated in the program, while there were 386 people in attendance the year before.
About 14 tonnes of chemicals were surrendered in 2018, while 16 tonnes were returned in 2017.
Mr Arthur said one of the aims of the annual clean-out was to deter the illegal dumping of chemicals.
"A big concern for us is we want to make sure things don't get flushed down the drain or down the toilet or put in the red bins," he said.
Chemicals that can be dropped off include residential quantities (20 kilogram or 20 litre maximum container size) of:
- Household cleaners
- Fluorescent globes and tubes
- Car and household batteries
- Motor oils and fluids
- Paints
- Garden, pool and hobby chemicals
- Gas bottles, fire extinguishers and poisons
Council's Moss Vale Depot can be entered via Parkes Road, Moss Vale.
Residents are reminded that the Depot is not located within the grounds of the nearby Resource Recovery Centre.
Council's Chemical CleanOut is a NSW EPA Waste Less, Recycle More initiative funded from the Waste Levy and supported by Council's Environment Levy.
