It's also a way for them to connect with other members of the Southern Highland community.

For the last three years, Sharon has been volunteering her time at the Avoca Community Hall as the secretary and function organiser.

In love with the history of the building, which is 103 years-old, Sharon believes that continuity is important for the community, which is why she answered the call for volunteers at the Avoca Ball three years ago.

"They were looking for people in the committee and wanted more women to get involved," she said.

"It's not just about giving back to the community.

"I moved here 20 years ago, I'm a city girl and volunteering in the community is a great way to get to know people and locals who have been here for generations.

"The community hall won't exist for the next generation without the hard work of volunteers."

Husband Greg has been volunteering at the Royal Fire Service for five years.

"It's about being a part of the community," he said.

"It's important to give something back."

For Greg, the best parts about volunteering his time to the RFS are the training nights and helping others in times of emergency.

"I like being able to help others"

"I like being in control of situations when other people are having a bad time."
