It's been an honour to be the local MP since 2010. I've worked hard to represent people from all parts of the electorate. I draw heavily upon my experience as a community worker and a lawyer before I entered Parliament.
What are your priorities for the Southern Highlands?
Labor wants to properly fund our hospitals and our Medicare system. We want to improve Medicare to introduce dental care for pensioners and a new Cancer Care Plan which will insure diagnosis, specialists and medications associated with cancer are paid for fully through the Medicare system.
In addition we want to ensure that wherever you send your kids to school, they get a quality education, to ensure this happens, we are investing in additional $21.4 million in public schools across our electorate.
I also want to support great volunteer organisations who are working to improve our community. That's why I'm committing $400,000 to the Southern Highlands Botanic Gardens to support them in the great work.
What can you do that your opponents can't?
My opponents can't promise to be a part of a stable united Government because for the past five years there been anything but that. If I'm elected I commit to being a part of a strong, united team which is delivering on our priorities locally and nationally.
What will you do for the roads?
Thousands of locals travel down to the coast along Picton Road every day. It can be a dangerous road with the death toll twice the national average. That's why I'm committing an additional $50 million to improve the road and make it safer. In addition Labor is committing another $50 million for the Appin Road, $50 million to get freight off our highways and onto the Maldon Dombarton Rail Link and an additional $150 million to improve the Princess Highway.
What are you priorities for health services?
A Shorten Labor Government will invest more in every single hospital in the country with our $2.8 billion Better Hospitals Fund. Labor's investment will lead to shorter emergency department and elective surgery waiting times. We have committed $250 million to blitz elective surgery waiting lists in public hospitals. Procedures such as knee and hip replacements or cataract surgeries are essential procedures for many Australians.
This commitment could pay for more than 62,000 cataract procedures or 9,800 knee replacements or 9,400 hip replacements. We will also deliver the biggest cancer care package in Australian history, with a $2.3 billion investment to dramatically slash out-of-pocket costs for cancer patients.
It will mean millions of free scans, millions of free consultations and cheaper medicines for cancer patients.
What are your priorities in terms of development and infrastructure?
I'm keen to get the high-speed rolling back on the national agenda. But my most pressing and immediate infrastructure priority is to get the NBN fixed.
What are your priorities on education and tertiary education ?
In the Southern Highlands alone, we will restore $4.37 million in funding to public schools, with schools across the electorate $21.4 million better off under Labor.
We will guarantee two out of three public vocational education dollars go to TAFE, with the balance going to not-for-profit community and adult educators, and only high quality private providers with demonstrated links to industry. Waive upfront fees for 100,000 students to attend TAFE.
The number of Australians getting a uni education will soar by around 200,000 thanks to Labor's plan to abolish the Coalition's unfair cap on student places - it's projected around 1000 more places will be created in Whitlam.
